Visit Platis Gialos
Platis Gialos is a pleasant beach resort about 4 kilometers from Mykonos Town on the island of Mykonos. It is an easy walk or drive from the Psarou beach which is popular with the jet set. Platis Gialos is a great family beach out of season and whilst it is busy in the summer it is quieter than the party beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise a little further round the coast.
Explore Platis Gialos
Greece This Way comment: Platis Gialos has a long sandy beach, clear turquoise sea, a mix of private and public beach areas and along the edge of the beach a good range of attractive restaurants and accommodation.
Platis Gialos, also called Platis Yialos and Platys Gialos, has the longest sandy beach on the island and is a short bus ride or drive from Mykonos Town and so it is a very popular beach resort. We visited early October and it was a treat. The beach was quiet, the sea warm, the restaurants not too busy and although we came for a day trip on the bus from Mykonos Town we decided that for our next visit we would stay here for a couple of days.
In the summer it is much busier but still not as crowded as the Paradise beaches or even Psarou beach just round the coast which attracts the jet set and lots of tourists because of its famous Nammos restaurant and beach club.
Along the beach there are lots of umbrellas and loungers which vary in price so look carefully when choosing. There is also a public beach area where you can set out your towel and enjoy the beach for free.
The beach is in a small bay and the rocky coast provides a pretty backdrop. Building around the beach has been kept low rise and is in the charming local style of whitewashed cube-shaped buildings with a splash of colour added by painted shutters, beach umbrellas or palm trees and bougainvillea.
The pleasant walk along the edge of the beach is lined with attractive restaurants at a range of prices along with a few boutique shops and various hotels and accomodations.
On the beach itself a range of watersports are available and if you wish you can hop from beach to beach using the water taxi which costs around 20 euros and allows you to hop on and off all day.
There is a good range of accommodation at Platis Gialos from self-catering appartments to boutique hotels and high-end hotels. If you are self catering there are a couple of small supermarkets and so you can buy the essentials.
Where to visit nearby?
The nearby Psarou beach is very popular, especially for its Nammos club and with the yachting crowd. In the height of summer many small and luxury yachts fill the small bay. The Aghia Anna beach is also very close.
Paradise and Super Paradise beach are famous party beaches and resorts to the east of Platis Gialos.
Mykonos Town is a real treat. Be sure to spend at least 2 or 3 days in the town to enjoy exploring its pretty streets both during the day and at night time when it has a lovely atmosphere.
