Zakynthos is the third largest of the Greek Ionian Islands, and is located just off the Western coast of the mainland.
Zakynthos is considered to be the most beautiful travel destinations in the entire country. In fact, Zakynthos or “Zante”, as it is fondly called in Italian, is considered to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Zakynthos stands for everything that an ideal Greek summer holiday can deliver; a lot of sunshine and the most beautiful beaches by the Ionian Sea, with the most stunning natural scenery.
Zakynthos is a popular tourist destination, especially for the tourists of Britain and Western Europe, who find Zakynthos as the perfect summer escape due to its pleasant climate, although the island has been neglected for a long while as a tourist destination. But another reason for its popularity, and the fact which really separates Zakynthos from the rest is the cleanliness and the preserved environment of its beaches, which is further enhanced by the breathtaking natural spectacles that this wonderful island has to offer.
Zakynthos features a number of blue flag beaches. The beaches which have been awarded a blue flag include Tsilivi, Bouka, Alykes 1 and 2, Alikanas 1 and 2 and Aboula Psarou. Probably the most popular of all Zakynthos beaches is the Navagio beach which features the famous shipwreck by a spectacular cove known as the “Smuggler’s Cove”.
Other beaches on the island include the Laganas, Agios Nikolas, Kalamaki Beach, Banana and Agrassi Beach, which are among the most crowded beaches while Limni Keriou is a quiet one. Porto Zoro and Gerakas are beaches with some extraordinary surroundings and an unspoilt environment.
A trip to Zakynthos can also be used as a good opportunity to visit other Greek holiday resorts, such as the neighboring Kefalonia, the island of Crete, Olympia and Delphi.
